photojournalist of the year portfolio
When shooting this photo, there were a range of emotions I wanted to showcase. The anger of the students in response to recent police violence to a fellow student along with the passion in which they chanted at the walkout was a unique event for me to personally cover.
Nora Acosta, Black Student Union (BSU) officer at Menlo-Atherton High School and one of the leaders of the school wide walkout, leads a chant “walkout for justice,” her voice amplified through a megaphone. Guiding the students as they pour out of the campus, her chant ignites a collective spirit, empowering each protester to find their voice and use it for their cause.
The Scotsland fair was an exciting event to wrap up the year that showcased the numerous clubs at the school along with fun activities including “Splash a Senior.” This was a memorable moment that I wanted to capture as it invoked a feeling of nostalgia and a sense of community.
At the “Splash a Senior” booth during the Scotsland fair at Carlmont High School, senior Oliver Welton was splashed by one of his friends, eager to shoot him with a water gun.
In place of the beloved “Dogs in the Quad,” Carlmont’s ASB decided to change things up and take a more unique approach for the stress relieving activity by hosting a “Llamas in the Quad.” In this shot, I wanted to display the feeling of comfort the llama, Yachay felt while being stroked by a student as well as the joyful expression of the senior showing her care for him.
Katherine Yu, a senior at Carlmont High School looks into the eyes of Yachay, one of the llamas from “Llamas in the Quad” as she gently brushes its fur back.
Sports photography has always been the type of photography I enjoyed the most and felt most comfortable shooting. During the performance of one of the martial artists at Carlmont, I wanted to capture both the expression on their face as well as the details of the action of swinging the fake weapons. I really like the way you can observe the amount of energy and effort put into the demonstration.
Aaron Chun, a sophomore in the Carlmont Martial Arts Club presents his skills in a short performance for the school during lunch in the quad.
For one of the biggest games of the season, I wanted to capture the facial expressions of one of the baseball players to show the effort in which they display. After one strike, I noticed the frustration from the athlete and the determination for a successful hit. I was happy with their pose as well as the emotion that added to the importance of this moment.
During the Scots’s Boys Varsity Baseball Senior Night, Carlmont senior James Tofigh takes his position in the batting box preparing to swing the bat, attempting a run in order to secure his team’s win for the final league game of the season.
